The sources of published works on the role of melatonin in health maintenance are the main databases accumulating the work of Russian and international authors: Elizabeth, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. When preparing this review, preference was given to full-text sources. Melatonin regulates the functioning of visceral systems, altering the activity of the autonomic nervous system, and is also involved in the humoral regulation of basic bodily functions. Its broad spectrum of pharmacological activity and low toxicity allow it to be incorporated into sports medicine and sports pharmacology practices as medications and dietary supplements. Indications for the use of melatonin in high-performance sports include the prevention and treatment of circadian rhythm disturbances due to jet lag, sleep disorders, improving mental and physical performance, and reducing the severity of stress and depression. A literature review revealed the need for continued and in-depth research into the antioxidant, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties of melatonin, as well as its potential use in sports as a means of preventing and correcting stress on the cardiovascular, central nervous, and immune systems. This opens the way not only to developing qualities associated with athletic performance but also to improving athletes' quality of life.
