The ancient Greek world, with its historical heritage and philosophical roots, is a living dialectical partner for the modern world, helping us through its serious disagreements in the philosophical and ethical aspects of cultivating qualities of virtue through combat sports, to identify flaws in our thinking, and to improve our own understanding of contemporary issues. By examining the fundamental understanding of ancient sport, the ethical sporting practices of antiquity, and their relationship to ancient Greek philosophy and modern philosophy, we enrich comparisons between modern practices and reveal a critical yet fruitful perspective on the dialog of ancient and modern sporting practices and philosophy
